03-07-2009 - A large format Dakar

The reconnaissance team has just returned from two weeks in Chile. Vastness, desert, off-track, and navigation are the most frequently-occurring words whenever we mention the 7 Chilean stages. Everything seems to evoke a marvellous and as-yet-explored land. Dunes, sand, and navigation will be on the menu every day from Fiambala and as far as La Serena. Between times, the rest day at Antofagasta on 9th January 2010, on the Pacific coast, will allow for an initial summing-up in the various categories after a few difficult days in the Atacama desert. Sand will certainly feature as far as San Rafael, but the highest stakes of Dakar 2010 will be in the Atacama, without a shadow of a doubt.

The scope of the specials will allow us to mix the starts of cars and trucks, without compromising on safety, on at least 7 stages. On the others, routes will be twin-tracked wherever possible: bikes and quads will be separated from cars and truck on stretches of the selective section. Following the latest reconnaissance information, David Castera also wanted to specify that there won’t be any legs without assistance during Dakar 2010.
