Important information
OPTIONAL INSURANCES (subscriptions strongly recommended)
The following three policies, developed in association with broker Gras Savoye, are optional but recommended to provide you with full cover during the rally.
As you may know, the vast majority of your normal insurance policies (particularly your car insurance, insurance provided automatically via your bank cards, household insurance, bank loan insurance, etc.) totally exclude the practice of car racing or rallying either on an amateur or professional basis, and therefore exclude the risks involved in your taking part in the 2010 Dakar.
It is therefore important that you check the extent of the cover provided by your normal insurance policies (and the exclusions) and, if you are not sufficiently covered or not covered at all, you should contact the insurer of your choice or consider taking out the proposed insurance policies by clicking on the link below.
Individual Accident Insurance, with or without a Medical Expenses option
This policy covers you if you have an accident whilst taking part in the rally. It will pay a benefit if you die or become permanently disabled as a result of the accident and will also reimburse all your medical expenses (if you have chosen that option).
The insurance covers you in the event of an accident (except for stated exclusions), whether or not you were responsible and whether or not there is a responsible (or identified) third party.
This cover is optional but highly recommended.
Maritime Transportation Insurance for vehicles carried by the ferries arranged by A.S.O., with Reimbursement of Expenses option
This policy covers damage to vehicles during their transportation between Le Havre dock and Delta Dock.
Under the Reimbursement of Expenses option, the insurance will repay your registration fee and any other expenses related to your preparation for and participation in the rally if your vehicle is unfit to take part due to damage caused during its transportation.
Vehicle Damage Insurance
This policy covers damage (other than minor) to vehicles during the rally (including both the special and liaison stages), whether or not you were responsible for the accident and whether or not there is an identified third party.
You can find further details about these three policies by clicking on the link below. They are optional but highly recommended and can be taken out straight away directly with Gras Savoye or, for Individual Accident and Vehicle Damage, no later than at the time of the administrative checks.

These documents were drafted in French according to contracts signed in French and is governed by the laws of France. French shall therefore be the prevailing language in the case of any problem.
CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS
In order to comply with customs requirements, and to ensure there are no problems while crossing the borders, you must necessarily have in your vehicle the same spare parts as declared at the outset. (see article 16P2 (Drivers’ code) of regulations).
So you have to fill a form to declare of your equipment (.xls)
Download an exemple (.pdf)
Instructions
You must send this form by e-mail, filled in English or in spanish. We will not accept this form on paper. You must fill all the fields for each equipment, spare part etc… You must fill one form per vehicle. You must send back the attachment before 15th november the 2009 to David FOULON: dfoulon@aso.fr
The competitors who will take care of their own logistics will have to declare the equipment they will be importing to Argentinean and Chilean customs. We recommend that these competitors use a professional customs clearance service. Should they so wish, they can get in touch with our service provider. The Waiver company which was in charge of this issue for Dakar 2009 is able to respond to a variety of customs clearance requirements (land, marine or air freight).

PLANT HEALTH CHECKS
Argentina has regions with protected agricultural areas, such as Patagonia and Cuyo. Sanitary controls contribute to the protection of this areas. For health reasons, the National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality of Argentina (SENASA) bans the ingress of the following products:
Prohibited products
- animal products (fresh, dried, frozen, cooked, smoked and preserved meat),
- fruits and vegetables,
- plant material,
- seeds and nuts.
Sanitary controls will take place on the bivouacs.
Competitors are required to complete and present sworn attestations before their ingress to Argentina. Infringements to applicable regulations will be penalized as laid down in Law 23889, Decree-Law 6704/63, Decree 1585/96.
Download SENASA presentation (.pdf)
Download the sworn attestation (.pdf)
For the same reasons, it is strictly forbidden to take the following items from Argentina to Chile (Servicio Agricola Ganadero, act n°18755 1989, modified in 1994, act n°19283). Vehicles will be searched prior to crossing the border.
Prohibited products
- fruit, vegetables, herbs, plants, tubers, bulbs, grains, hay, twigs, soil, cut flowers, handicrafts, wood and other vegetable products, pesticides and fertilisers,
- animals, birds, bees, honey, cheese, milk, meat and dairy or meat products, embryos, seeds, veterinary medicines (vaccines, diagnostic kits, antibiotics, medicated shampoo etc) or any other animal products or any animal food,
- protected flora and fauna and / or by-products derived from species under threat of extinction, including threatened species of flora and fauna under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
In addition to the risks incurred locally by failure to comply with the rules in force (fines, impoundment of vehicle / passengers, etc.), any crew found to have breached this rule will be penalised with a fine from €500 up to exclusion.
The sworn attestation must be presented at the migration border controls at the bivouac in Fiambala as well as to the SAG patrol at the border before your vehicles is checked.
Reminder: if the border patrols find some forbidden products as you cross the border, the whole control will take much more time, added to the application of the corresponding penalties.
The order of the safety equipment is one of the most important steps in your Dakar preparation. Please find below a brief of each mandatory equipment (costs included in the vehicle fee) and respective order forms which are to sent back to our suppliers before middle of November. If necessary, you may add your optional choices on these forms, knowing that these costs are not included in the registration fee. This equipment will be mounted before boarding in Le Havre on 25th & 26th November (during the technical scrutineerings in Buenos Aires for the vehicles which will not be loaded in Le Havre). You must then present your vehicles with the accessories mounted ready to fiw the equipment.
IRITRACK - DISTRESS BEACON
Iritrack is a safety instrument and must therefore be connected directly to the battery.
Iritrack enables real-time monitoring of positions and tracking of competitors, thereby making it easier to follow the race.
Iritrack enables you to transmit qualified information to the race headquarter (PCO) in real time. In the case of a problem, you can be pinpointed by the organization and even talk with them.
Fields of application are as follows:
- triggering or requesting emergency help in case of a serious incident (for you or for another competitor),
- transmission of an alarm and/or telephone contact with the PCO.
With two possible modes:
- transmission of an alarm and/or telephone contact with the PCO,
- automatic: if a brutal shock or a prolonged stop of the vehicle is detected, the system transmits an alarm message to the PCO indicating your GPS position. With the telephone function, the PCO can contact you without any action on your part (automatic receiver pick-up and inbuilt microphone) to establish a dialogue.
THE SARSAT DISTRESS BEACONS
The SARSAT distress beacons are mandatory for all vehicles in the race (cars, bikes, quads and trucks).

SENTINEL
Sentinel is a safety instrument and must therefore be connected directly to the battery. Sentinel is a safety system fitted to all racing vehicles. It enables to warn the competitors on the following cases:
- The vehicle behind wants to overtake: when the driver of a car or truck presses on the push-button control, a signal is transmitted to the competing bike/quad/car/truck that he wants to overtake (range: 150 meters). The driver about to be overtaken receives an audible warning.
- Accident warning alarm: if a vehicle represents a danger to competitors arriving on the sport (concealed behind a dune, rollover after turn, …), the pilot must press the two alarm buttons on his Sentinel. Then coming competitors are thus informed by an Audible Buzzer plus a Flashing Light.

TRIPY ROADMASTER - ELECTRONICAL ROADBOOK FOR ASSISTANCE
Assistance vehicules of Dakar 2010 will be fit with a “Tripy” GPS electronical Roadboo.
Tripy Roadmaster is a qualified GPS based navigation roadbook offering to the crews:
- the automatic display of the roadbook notes (including instantaneous km countdown),
- a Tripmaster function,
- a warning for overspeed or upcoming itinerary danger,
- a warning for quitting the itinerary and a navigation assistance help to rejoin it.
The navigation system warns the driver as soon as he quits the planned itinerary. In this instance, a compass arrow shows up and displays the straight line direction to follow, to reach the next WayPoint.
As soon as the track is rejoined, the roadbook resets and resumes at that point. Tripy RoadMaster, initially developed for motorbikers, offers an optimum passive safety and provides unequalled driving comfort.

MONEY
Euros are not used in Argentina and Chile. You must change into local currencies. US dollar can be a solution but local currencies are more easily accepted.
The currencies are different in Argentina and Chile:
Argentina: argentinean peso
Chile: chilean peso
For your information, please find below exchange’s rates on 15/10/2009:
1 argentinean peso = 0,175 euros
1 chilean peso = 0,00122 euros
Credit card payments can only be done at the hotels and petrol stations. Be careful on the boarder crossing (there is not a lot of cash machines).
When you enter each country, you cannot have more than 10,000 dollars on cash (per person).
Budget idea for a motorcyclist = 3,000 euros (including fuel) in case of problems, …, but you will have access to cash machines on every stage town.
