Thierry Bethys: “In Dakar, you see the passion”
18th overall for his first Dakar in 2006, 8th last year, what can we expect from Honda rider Thierry Bethys this year? “To go ten steps better this year”, laughs this biker crazy for sand and dunes with an outstanding record book (three-time winner of the enduro du Touquet, eight times French motocross and supercross champion).
Despite all his titles, the man from Vendée still has a huge passion for bikes. “I fell into the world of bikes when I was little! But the Dakar is a one-of-a-kind adventure and a moment when you meet different people”. Indeed, his friendship with Corsican Michel Marchini started on the bivouacs of the rally. Moments that make the Dakar so special for Bethys. “And the finish in Dakar is always great, he adds. You really see the passion of guys who have struggled to find a budget and who make it with a huge smile…”
According to Thierry, the fundamental quality to manage a good Dakar is “anticipation”. “You must always think of what you might find behind a dune. As a Crossman, I’m used to giving 110% and enjoy myself on jumps”. A huge moment of luck during the Shamrock could have made him deeply regret his keenness. “I jumped over a dune and there was a 7 or 8 metre hole behind! I fell but this type of experience makes you learn very quickly”. And to try and manage a good performance and why not an exploit, Therry Bethys will “control himself!”
