Emanuel Gyenes: "Position myself as one of the best on a 450cc"
At only 23 years of age, Emanuel Gyenes will be starting his second Dakar. During the 2007 edition, the young Romanian managed an impressive performance for his baptism of fire. 49th overall and 9th of the newcomers, he confirmed an old French saying: value doesn’t wait for the number of years.
After having almost discovered Africa during the Dakar last year with "some worries", he now feels free. Reassured because he knows "what to expect". "That’s what makes the difference between those who take off for their first Dakar and those who know the event", he believes.
This year, Emanuel has gone for a KTM 450 EXC Rally, a lighter model than the 660 he had for his last Dakar. This tactical choice will allow him to fight it out in a class where he hopes to play the leading roles. "The goal is to be among the best 450cc bikers. Added to that, because the 2008 Dakar is full of sand stages, the lighter weight of the bike will be an advantage".
When questioned on a clear objective, Emanuel prefers to stay silent. He however mentions that a place within the leading 30 would be a satisfaction. No matter what, his personal challenge is far bigger than just taking part. Emanuel is a champion of the future. Already champion of his country in enduro and cross-enduro, he easily dominates his national races. According to his manager, he could become a key figure of the Dakar in 4 or 5 years.
