Hugo Payen: « Organising long distance Dakar aperitifs”
If Hugo Payen’s last Dakar didn’t finish with success (retirement on the 8th stage in 2006), this motorcycle competitor from Nantes did set a record. In two weeks his blog welcomed 18 000 visitors. “The site was a great way for my entourage to experience the race and in addition they all became raid fans.” To update a blog during the Dakar can’t be easy? “I phoned a colleague of mine every night who reported on my day on the Internet.”
Even better, Hugo Payen’s adventures were the opportunity to “organise Dakar aperitifs by long distance Dakar aperitifs”, in his quad rental business at the arrival of each stage. The entire staff got the chance to share in on their boss’ race. “Setting off on the Dakar also provides me with some professional credibility”, Hugo says. Three years ago, Hugo Payen opened an indoor quad centre, “the first in France”. Motor racing is an integral part of Hugo’s life. The last edition wasn’t a sinecure. A fall resulted in a broken forearm and wrist. “I was still able to complete the stage and then despite all that I continued on for the following day’s stage. But the motor gave way just before Nouakchott, just ahead of the rest day…” A misadventure that “calmed his heals just a bit”. The goal this year is to finish and if possible “finish not too badly”, without thinking about revenge.
