Ruben Faria: « I am aiming for the top 10 but it is a long race»
2007 finished rather well for Ruben Faria: 9th in Dubai, 6th in Sardinia and a win in Morocco. What better way to forget his retirement on stage 8 of the Dakar at the start of the year. “I had an engine problem in Morocco and another on the first day in Mauritania. It was a real shame because I found the event to be physically easier than it was in my first participation”. This year, Ruben Faria has changed teams, changed motorcycle and has rethought his ambitions seeing that the experience he has gained on the event is beginning to pay off. “I think I can run in the top ten. But with the Dakar you never know. It is a long race”. With his KTM 690 he is part of the same team as the other top Portuguese rider, Helder Rodrigues. An association in the framework of Team Lagos that all of Portugal is hoping for it to win. Added
pressure on the opening stages that Ruben assumes. “It is good for the public and our sponsors. It won’t be quite as good in Morocco where it isn’t good to be the leader with all the navigation”. This is the Portuguese rider’s Achilles Heal but he has a remedy. “You have to study the road book a lot to be comfortable. You don’t need to have done a lot of Dakars”. A way of saying that Ruben is no longer a novice on the rally and that his claims are very real.
