Einars Vinters: "I started riding bikes to stop smoking"
A first attempt, a fine attempt. Latvia’s Einars Vinters offered himself in 2007 the luxury of a first Dakar in the marathon class with no assistance that not only did he finish but he also captured an excellent 14th spot overall. Of course the rider has quite some experience on a bike after taking part in several Latvian and Baltic Championships in enduro and motocross, but his first appearance inspires respect. Especially because the Latvian came to bike riding in a rather unfamiliar way: "I started to stop smoking!" That was eight years ago and here he is now able to prepare his own machine for the Dakar.
Einars Vinters made the best of the help of his brother Janis - a major figure in sports back in Latvia - during his apprenticeship. Both remain extremely close to each other. Einars’ goal for the 2008 Dakar says it all: "I would like to finish in the top 10 and help my brother conquer the best possible ranking".
